Born:   November 20, 1891 in Neenah, Winnebago County, Wisconsin

Father’s name:  William Henry Wingrove (b. December 29, 1854, d. June 5, 1894 in Neenah, Wisconsin)

            Birth Place:    Birmingham, England

Birth Place:  Hall Green, Birmingham, England

Siblings:         Anna Wingrove

Albert F. Wingrove

Florence Wingrove

William J. Wingrove (?) d. May 17, 1948

George Wingrove

In 1908, Walter is living in Appleton, Wisconsin with his sister Florence and father William.  Brother George is also in town with his wife Theresa.  In 1910, father William has moved out, but brother Albert has moved in.  (Appleton City Directories.)

The 1910  Census shows Walter with his Mom, Dad and 2 siblings living in Appleton, Outagamie County, Wisconsin.   Father is noted as a Frank ‘Reyes’ with both parents born in Germany and Mother Fanny’s parents both born in England.  Frank’s stated employment is papermaker; sister Florence also works in the paper mills as a sorter; brother Albert is a driver, dry goods.  I don’t understand where the name Frank Reyes comes from.  There is pretty solid evidence that the William Henry Wingrove noted above and with more information below is correct.  Frank Reyes never appears anywhere else at anytime.  I’m presuming this is an error by the census taker.

Following their marriage, Walter and Eunice moved to Sheboygan where Walter operated the Wingrove Oil Co.  They lived at 321 Huron Ave.

The 1920 Census shows Walter married to Eunice with their first daughter, Helen.  They are in Grand Chute, Outagamie County, Wisconsin.  Also living with them, written in the Census as following, are:

Brother-in-law Mother ? Bargis, 76, Widow  (This is Leona (Dane) Briggs.  Note the misspelling of the last name.)

Mother-in-Law Mary ?, 47, Widow  (This will be Mary Elizabeth (Briggs) after her 2nd husband Austin Horr’s death.)

Sister-in-law Frances Brooks, 23  (This will be Eunice’s full sister Frances Josephine Brooks before her marriage to Archibald Kowald.)

Sister-in-law Mary Horr, 18.  (Eunice’s half-sister.)

By 1930, Walter, Eunice and their 2 daughters have moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

The Wingrove Oil Company had their office in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on the corner of South Water Street and Illinois Avenue.   The earliest mention I have found was in the 1938 City Directory.  They were considered to be Sheboygan’s largest and most reliable fuel oil distributor.  Their motto, “Quality backed by a million gallon fuel oil storage.”  In addition to the home fuel oil service, there was a series of 3 Texaco service stations, all within the city of Sheboygan: #1 at the same address as the office, #2 on the corner of 8th and Huron, and #3 on the corner of 8th and Jefferson.  An example of a Wingrove Texaco dealer ad can be found at the Wingrove World genealogy site.  In October of 1953, Wingrove Oil Co. became a division of the C. Reiss Coal Company.

In the 1871 British census, Walter’s father, William, was living at home with his parents John Wingrove and Martha (Montgomery).  In 1881 he was married and living at 46 Arden Road, Birmingham England, occupation papermaker.  He was married to Fanny Joiner who was b September 15, 1862 in Hall Green, Birmingham.
