Austin died after being scalded by a burst pipe where he worked at the Howard Paper Company paper mill in Menasha, Wisconsin.  Apparently he lingered for 3-4 days before passing.  Mae and the family of another that was injured in the accident sued the mill.  She did win a settlement of $2,500 in November of 1905.

These articles appeared in the Appleton Daily Post newspaper.

The first one dated Saturday, February 27, 1904 and the second on Tuesday, March 1, 1904.

Niece Ruth Ann Peake (daughter of Thomas W. Brooks.  See below.) shared this with me, “My father told me about his death, he must have remembered it, and said it was a very sad time and a very painful death.”

Mae’s children from her previous marriage to Frank John Brooks:

Eunice Ruth (Brooks) Wingrove

                        Helen Margaret (Brooks) Williams
