Wife Laetitia McKillop was born 1788 in Barrington, Nova Scotia and christened on September 8, 1791, also in Barrington.  She passed in Lockeport on May 17, 1839.  Sometimes her first name is spelled more traditionally as Letitia, however, her grave markers (Yes, plural) consistently use the spelling with the extra ‘a’, though her mother does not use the extra ‘a’ herself.  She is the daughter of John and Letitia (Rice) McKillop.  Laetitia is buried by her husband in the old Locke’s Burial Ground in Lockeport, Nova Scotia.  And, same as her husband Samuel, she is mentioned on an additional marker in Lockeport’s Church Street Cemetery.

This sign is at the entrance to Locke’s Burial Ground.  Graves 3 & 4 are for Samuel and Laetitia.

Please find more information regarding this cemetery on brother Jonathon Locke’s page.

Left:  Laetitia’s marker should be the broken stone in the middle of this photo.

Right:  In memory of Samuel Locke who died March 15, 1844, aged 89 yrs.

The details on Samuel’s marker do not correspond to any record that I have seen.  Is it right?  If it is right, then there is a larger mystery.

Here is the Church Street Cemetery marker.  It reads:

In memory of Samuel Locke, Feb. 10 1881, aged 96 yrs

And wife Laetitia, May 17 1839, aged 51 yrs

Wife Nansy, Aug. 19 1877 aged 94 yrs

These small markers are near the base of the larger spire.

They have the initials (left) W.L. and (right) C.L., L.F.L. and E.S.L., possibly for children.

My best guess is they are children of Allen Locke, son of Enos C. and Eleanor Locke:

WL = Walter Locke abt 1879; LFL = Louis F. Locke abt 1877; ESL = Elinor St.C. Locke = abt 1883.

And then maybe CL = Clifford Locke, a son of Jacob.

Alternately, LFL = Louis Frederick Locke, 4/6/1856 - 5/6/1856, son of Enos C. and Eleanor Locke

Notice that on the Locke’s Burial Ground sign and the Church Street marker, Laetitia’s information is the same, they match and are certainly for the same person.  However, Samuel’s information doe not match.  According to the sign, he would have been born in 1755 and died in 1844 at age 89.  The dates are plausible, but I’m unable to corroborate it with any source.  The Church Street marker would have Samuel born in 1785 and died in 1881 at age 96.   These are the generally accepted dates for Samuel.  I’m unable to explain how or why this came to be.  As I continue with my research, I will keep an eye out for any possibilities.

Samuel and Laetitia’s son, John, has the distinction of representing the Province of Nova Scotia at the Queen’s Proclamation of Union.  Also known as the British North America Act, this Proclamation united the Provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Canada into one Dominion under the name of Canada.  John Locke’s name is listed under the third column in the image below, fourth from the bottom.  So here is another reason for us to celebrate on July 1st, Dominion Day.  His date of birth has been somewhat confusing to me because I’ve seen other sources place it in 1830.  I’m using the 1825 date based on a transcript of his obituary in the December 15, 1873 paper, the Novascotian and through research found in the Shelburne County Genealogical Society Research Centre & Library.   The Hon. John Locke married on January 4, 1851 to his cousin Mary Elizabeth Churchill, daughter of father Samuel’s sister, Abigail (Locke) Churchill.  They had at least one son named Stanley.   He was appointed Senator by Royal Proclamation, caucused with the Liberal Party of Canada, and served from November 6, 1867 until his death on December 12, 1873.

Sen. John Locke’s home, now preserved in the Locke Family Streetscape.

The land was deeded to John from his father Samuel in 1841, with the home being built in 1846.

From there it went to son Stanley, then to widowed mother Mary.

The town seized the property from Mary in 1901 due to unpaid taxes,

a common occurrence at the time due to many family businesses going bankrupt.

Samuel’s son Jacob was deeded property from his father in 1841.  Jacob was a merchant and ran the firm Jacob Locke and Son, a business which sent fishing vessels to the banks and also engaged in the West India trade.   The home that Jacob built is very similar to the one that his brother John built, and it too is part of the Locke Family Streetscape.   Jacob married Emmeline Marion Jamieson on September 2, 1852 at Locke’s Island (Lockeport), of the Shelburne Parish of the Anglican Church.  Jacob and Emmeline’s children were sons Clifford and George Snyder.  George died May 30, 1861 at 18 months.  Jacob passed on January 4, 1886, aged 63 yrs.  Both are buried in the Church Street Cemetery, however I was unable to find their markers.

Daughter Catharine Locke married the Honorable Wynn Johnstone on Feb. 3, 1841.  He was born in 1803 in Scotland.

Son Samuel Locke became a judge and is referred to as the Hon. Samuel Locke.  Married Ann Crowell on November 12, 1839, Christ Church in Shelburne, NS and has a son named Henry Locke.  Henry Locke was deeded the land for what became the largest house in the Streetscape, built in 1876.  The house is still in the possession of the same family with Helen Ghent and Frederick Partridge.  They may have had another son named Churchill Locke, b. 1848.  This son appears to be an ancestor to the Partridge’s who currently own the Henry Locke Streetscape home.  I have photocopies of the family info from the Churchill Locke Bible, however, it is very difficult to read. Please write me if you would like me to try and find something: jrkho5@sbcglobal.net
