John is considered to be the first child born in Lockeport. Later he was schooled and boarded with a Captain Jenkins in West Green Harbor, where he learned navigation. John became the Captain of the first vessel registered/owned in Lockeport, the Brigantine Nova Scotia. After many years of sea-faring, he decided to stay home with family and started a large mercantile business and built a home, the sixth home built in Lockeport. John and his brothers performed duties with a militia company, John holding the rank of Captain. He sensed a calling to the Lord, studied and became the towns Preacher and was appointed Justice of the Peace.
