Son
Thomas, born 1420? and died in 1478. He
married Alice (Duke) and they had a son George who married Maud Bardolph. Their
residence is Hide Hall in Hertsfordshire County. George Josselyn and
Maud Bardolph had 4 children; Ralph, Elizabeth,
Phillip and John. (There is an LDS entry
that says they had 3 children; Jane, Anne, and Thomas. I believe that this is in error and should
actually reflect the children of son John.)
George and Maud’s son John carried the title Sir Knight and 1st
married Cicely Molineaux and had 2 children Phillip
and Nicholas. John married 2nd
Phippa Bradbury and they had 3 children; Jane, Anne,
and Thomas. Thomas, born in 1506 and
also carried the title Sir Knight, married Dorothy Gates and they had 8
children. Thomas’ son Richard, born abt 1526, married Anne Lucas and they had 10 children. Richard’s son John, born abt
1573, married Elizabeth Wiseman and they had 5 children, including a Thomas,
born abt 1604.
A later son of Thomas was Edward, born about 1548, died August 15, 1627,
and married Mary Lambee. Another son of
Thomas and Dorothy is Henry who married Anne Torrell. Their son, Thomas, married Theodora Cooke and
they had a son Henry who went on to become a Deputy Governor of Maine.
Son Nathaniel, born abt 1425 is a guess from clues found in LDS. We do not know whom he married, but he did
have a son named Thomas, born about 1455 at Hide Hall and likely died after
1509. Therefore, he is in the same Hertsfordshire county area as many of the rest of the
family. The St. Michael parish
records include an accounting of expenses and receipts relating to the
establishment and endowment of the Chantry of St. John the Baptist in the
second year of King Richard III. That
places this in the year of 1485.
Unfortunately the page is torn and the entry is incomplete. What can be read says, “Item pd in expens on Shroffe Munday the ffirst yere of…[torn]…at Westmester…[torn]…Mr. Philpot, Mr. Josselyn…[torn]…at
Chelmysford to bring theiss…[torn].” That by itself does not offer much, but the
first year phrase likely refers to the beginning of King Richard III’s reign and Chelmsford is a known residence for our Josselyn family. The
next chronological entry to be found is a note that Thomas Josselyn
is a Churchwarden for the years 1498 and 1509.
Also found is a payment to Thomas Josselyn for
his assistance in painting the tabernacle.
There are no other mentions for Thomas after this point.
Next we have numerous
mentions for what I believe to be Thomas’ son, John Josselyn,
estimated to have been born about 1480 and died before 1530. However, it could
also be Thomas’ brother, who was born abt 1468 and
died July 14, 1525. The brother Thomas
married Cicely Molineaux. The parish records range from John’s
assisting with a widow’s rent in 1517, selling timber to the church in 1519,
being a Churchwarden from 1518 – 1519, then “to be gyder
and ruler of the Common light” in 1520.
The record culminates with the church receiving a payment of rent in the
21st year of the reign of Henry VIII (1530) from a William Boyington for his tenement in Hokerell
late of John Josselyn.
Other St. Michael
parish records include a note in 1549 of a young Josselyn
for playing the organ; A John Josselyn as an Overseer
in 1657; and a 1692 Grocer, Samuel Jocelyne who was
appointed a Trustee of charities belonging to the church and Poor of Stortford.
Another side of the family
with Ralph Josselyn
have a presence in the Bishop Stortford area.
