Capt. John Locke came to Portsmouth, New Hampshire in the 1640’s.  By 1652, with wife Elizabeth, they moved to Rye, New Hampshire, approx. 8 miles from Hampton.  Capt John Locke was attacked and killed by Indians while in his own fields.  (I don’t know if that’s the politically correct way to phrase that event in modern times now, but that is how it is traditionally told.)

Wife Elizabeth Berry is the daughter of William and Jane Berry from Devon, England.  The Berry family also came to America in 1631 as “planters” to the area known as Strawberry Bank, now Portsmouth Sandy Beach, New Hampshire.  They also moved to Rye, NH (1654?) and are considered to be the first colonists to live in Rye.  They were married in 1634 and had 7 children.  William died in 1654.

Son John Locke, b. abt 1654, married Elizabeth Bolles of Wells, ME [Also spelled Bowles] about 1677.  Elizabeth likely died before 1708.  John is mentioned as having jury duty in 1704, and having scouts posted as far as his house on June 5, 1705.  Children are John Jr., Richard, Jethro, and Elizabeth.

There is a detailed book regarding Capt. John Locke and his descendents.  A History and Genealogy of Captain John Locke, by Arthur H. Locke, originally published in 1917.  Reprints are available through the Locke Family Association, and 2 supplements have been added with a third on its way.
