All date’s used on this page were verified through Vital Records of Ipswich.  Some additional information is from other sources as noted.

First wife Elizabeth’s maiden name, according to Ipswich Vital Records, is spelled as Pottar, though it is commonly spelled Potter.  Essex county Probate records are consistent with spelling the family name as Potter.  The record also spells Nathaniel’s name as Dean, rather than Dane.  Notes in the Dane GenForum also say that both of Elizabeth (Potter) Dane’s children died young.  For reasons that I have not yet determined, some sources say that Ms. Potter’s first name is Mary or Marey.  Ipswich vital records is very consistent with her name as Elizabeth.

Second spouse Ann’s maiden name has been seen spelled as Loe, but again, Essex county probate records are consistent in spelling the family’s name as Low

Esther (Kimball) Dane likely died November 27, 1770 in Ipswich, Massachusetts as per Essex Probate Index, file # 7085.  Rev. Spalding in transcribing church marriage records spells the name as “Kembel” and adds that the marriage was performed by Rev. Samuel Wigglesworth in Hamilton, which is also known as the Third Parish of Ipswich.  Parents of Esther (Kimball) Dane were Ephraim Kimball and Mary (Friend) Kimball, m. November 24, 1685.  Ephraim was b. February 18, 1660 in Wenham, Massachusetts and d. January 16, 1731 or 2.  He was son of Richard Kimball (2) son of Richard Kimball (1).  Mary Friend was b. May 6, 1666 and d. October 26, 1741.   She was daughter of James Friend who was Deacon of Wenham’s first church.  James was called a “Yeoman”.  His will was made July 1, 1731 and proven February 14, 1732.  He left his wife, Mary, the east end of the dwelling house, half the cellar, all his household goods, two cows, and five cords of wood, corn meal and malt, and three barrels of cider yearly.  He owned land in Wenham and Topsfield.  (Notes per: History of the Kimball Family, vol 1/ by Leonard Allison Morrison, Call # CS71.K49, page 52.)  Continuing research in Wenham, I found in their vital records the filing of intention to marry for Nathaniel and Esther.  It has the unusual spellings of, “Deen, Nathanill, of Ipswich, and Ester Kemball,” Dated October 16, 1732.

2nd Daughter named Elizabeth may have passed 10/17/1772 in Ipswich unmarried as there is a record in Ipswich Vitals, but I’m not certain if it is the same Elizabeth from this same family.  However, Walter Crean  posted to Ancestry.com’s Dane board that Elizabeth Dane, daughter of Nathaniel and 2nd wife Anna Lowe, married James Adams.  Ipswich Vitals does have this.  James is the son of Samuel Adams baptized April 14, 1717.   (Samuel may be from Charlestown, West Virginia who married Ruth Waite in Charlestown on November 25, 1718.)  There are no births or deaths in Ipswich related to this couple, so they likely moved away from the area right after the wedding.

Nathaniel, and his brothers John and Daniel, are named in the account of subscribers that built the school house in the Hamlet in 1730.

Son Nathaniel Jr. married Lucy (Low) Tilton, widow of Josiah Tilton, on October 12, 1745 in Ipswich.  Josiah Tilton had died earlier in 1741.  Josiah had married Lucy Low in Ipswich on December 6, 1737.
