On August 25, 1864, Robert enlisted in the Army to fight in the Civil War.  He was with Wisconsin’s First Regiment Heavy Artillery, Battery L.  They primarily defended areas around Washington, D.C. with his Battery positioned at Fort Willard.  He was mustered out on August 18, 1865.  Robert’s 1899 obituary notes him as having been a member of Company I, 32nd Wisconsin Volunteers and that he “died from disabilities sustained in the service of his country.”  So those ‘disabilities’ are something that he lived with for about 33 ½ years.

They moved north to Brown County for a short period and then moved back to Appleton.  The 1874 Appleton City Directory shows a Robert Briggs on Spencer St.  Specifically, on farmland located on the south side of Spencer street, first property west of the railroad tracks.  In the 1891 Directory, he’s still there along with a Louis A., Emory, and Laura A. Briggs, this is likely his cousin Lewis Albert Briggs and his children, I do not know where Lewis’ wife Emma is at this time.  Later, in 1925, that property is in the hands of a Mabel Millard.  She is likely related to Uncle Ansel Bailey Briggs’s wife, Ruth, as her maiden name is Millard.  Also shown in that city directory is a boarder named Alfred Bounds.

Wife Anna was born in Illinois with her father from Massachusetts and mother from Vermont.
